It All Begins Here
After finishing a gap year in Canada, founder James starts working for a soap company based in the main village on Skye, Portree. Discovering a flare for mixing scents and having a passion for natural products he sets about starting the Isle of Skye Candle Company to compliment the soaps.
Home Sweet Home
James, with help from family and friends, renovates the bothy based on his uncle's croft in Braes, and turns it into his candle making workshop (complete with authentic grass roof and wood burning stove). Here James makes the first Skye candles, they are not perfect by any means but a good start.
After a few months of tedious experimenting and lots of research into candle making, James makes the first sale of his candles. It's a small order to the local soap shop he worked in, but it is the start of a beautiful journey.
On the Web
With growing demand for the candles from both consumers and wholesalers we decide to develop our own website, allowing candle lovers to make their purchases at the click of a button.
Small Fish in a Big Pond
Skye Candles' reputation as a quality affordable product increases and soon we have enquiries from all over Scotland with people looking to stock them.
With demand increasing, James decides to take on another member of staff. It's a big responsibility but with faith in what he's doing he's sure it'll take the candles to the next level.
More Product Development
With eyes on the rest of the UK we choose to develop new packaging and rebrand the IOSCC logo. We decided to go from rustic to a sleek and colourful design. It matches what we represent perfectly.
Moving to a New Place
Demand for Skye Candles hits an all time high, resulting in a new shop and workshop being opened in Broadford, Skye. It's something of a big deal for Skye Candles and all our faithful supporters. We have a ceilidh to celebrate our success with family and friends, and then we get down to work.
And the Award Goes To…
The Isle of Skye Candle Company wins 'Best New Scottish Company' at the Scottish Variety Awards. Again we party and celebrate our biggest achievement to date.
Charity Tie Up
In September we launch a new candle in collaboration with the Environmental Justice Foundation to provide money for their 'No Place Like Home' campaign. Together we raised over £3500!
Our first shop on the mainland opens on the 22nd of February on West Bow in our capital, Edinburgh. We crack open the whisky and champagne, then we ceilidh again.
With our second store in Edinburgh doing so well and the brand growing we decide that we should open another. The perfect place comes up in Inverness but it's a mad rush to get it open for Christmas. We get the keys on the 7th of December and have it open by the 10th!
And Now Something Scottish
After years of getting asked for more Scottish scents, we come up with some that we know will blow people away. That coupled with our fantastic new packaging makes one beautiful product.
We're on something of a roll, and 4 years to the day from opening our Skye store, on the 4th of April we open our 4th store in St Andrews. It's the perfect location for us and we celebrate with a round of golf of course!
And now for another! We open our perfect store on the prestigious Buchanan St. in Scotland's biggest city, Glasgow. It's something of a mile stone for us to be nestled in amongst other big name brands.
In December we pitched to a panel of Business leaders in a Dragon's den style pitch to secure funding to help develop the Skye Candles brand even further. We were delighted even to make the final, but after winning an award we couldn't be more excited by the opportunities to come.
What an amazing journey we've had, 10 years has flown by! Of course we have to celebrate this occasion so we set about decorating our offices with lots of beautiful Skye botanics. With the place stocked up with Fireworks and gin we invite a host of people who have helped us over the years to celebrate. What a night!!
Restoring Loch Arkaig
After developing a new fragranced composed mainly of scots pine oil, and with a passion for our native woodlands here in Scotland, when we heard about the Woodland Trust’s efforts to buy and restore the Loch Arkaig forest we felt this was the perfect way to get involved and try to make a difference. With every sale of our Scots Pine candle, we pledged £1 of it to helping save the Loch Arkaig pine forest.
